Valdosta, Georgia is a city in McIntosh County, Georgia, United States. The population was 571 at the 2010 census. Valdosta is the county seat of McIntosh County. Valdosta is home to the McIntosh State Park and the historic Gwinnett County Courthouse which was built in 1892. The first white person to reside in what is now Valdosta was James Pemberton who arrived there on July 4, 1797 with his family from Virginia. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson's army invaded McIntosh County and burned all of Valdosta before retreating back into Tennessee. In 1814, when President James Kenedy founded the Western Reserve (later Cobb) District in northern Georgia, he selected Valdosta as its seat. On December 3 of that year, an act of Congress designated McIntosh County as one of these districts and organized it into a district under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of War. In 1821–22 Gouverneur Morris conducted a survey along what is now I-15 for plans for a route connecting Atlanta and Chattanooga via Augusta and Dahlonega; this survey led to development around Interstate 15 and downtown Valdosta became known as "the town square." The first courthouse in Valdosta opened on May 24, 1822 on land donated by Captain John Whitehead afterdquare sawed down two old trees near present day Dillard Street for this purpose. A post office was established at Valdosta on October 12, 1825; it continued until it closed on October 25th due to lack of mail volume from inland residents combined with being located next door to Fort Gaines which had no Postal Service service at that time! Heinrich Wilhelm Bacheeler became territorial governor in 1830−31 after having been elected as congressman from Alabama during Georgians' first national election held since their admission into Confederation under Ulysses S. Grant; he served until January 1st1832 when he resigned because he could not win re-election against parties nominated by Governor Thomas J Marshall who also served as prosecutor general during Bacheeler's term…Bacheeler then moved his residence from Milledgeville eastwardly towards Dahlonega where he died suddenly February 14th1834 while out hunting deer near present day streetside intersection called “Bacheelers Walk” just southwest corner Of Baldwin Avenue And Franklin Street…. Voted dead by House but recovered live….. After his death state law declared February 14th1834 Erected As Date Of His Death…. This date remains memorialized today By A plaque At entrances To Dahlonega Municipal Courthouse And By A Tree Named For Him In The Town Square….The original name given to this location When It Was First Settled Which Was “Bacheels Walk”Was “Gwinnett Place”…..After His Death That Name reverted Back To What It Is Today…….. During The 1990s A Movie Set Was Built Nearby Called “Stroudsburg” But It Supposedly Never Blamed Gwinnett Place For Any Failures There……..Today An Exciting New Project Is Underway To Bringstant Attention To This Location CALLED THE GWINNETT PLACE PROJECT
