Valdosta, Georgia is a small town located in Fulton County, Georgia. Valdosta was founded in 1821 as a port on the then-new Savannah River. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location at the mouth of the Ocmulgee River and its importance as a transportation hub. Valdosta became an industrial center during this time and was known for producing paper, cotton, lumber, and other products. In the 1940s and 1950s, Valdosta experienced a reverse engineer movement which led to significant growth in the town's economy. Today, Valdosta is home to many technology companies and nursing homes that maintain local industries.
The Valdosta area was first settled by the Algonquians, a group of Native Americans. The area was part of the British Colony of Georgia and it was after the Revolution that Valdosta became an important seaport. In 1802, Valdosta was chartered as a town under the name of "Fulton". The first president of Valdosta County was James Fenton and in 1817, he erected what is now known as the Fenton House. The town grew rapidly and by 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Valdosta. By 1840, there were over 1,500 people living in Valdosta County. In 1851, when Sherman's army took Atlanta during the American Civil War, General Pemberton ordered his army to cross the Chattahoochee River and move towards Fulton. When they reached Fulton on April 15th, they burned all but one building in what is now known as "The Battle Of Fulton". After this victory over General Pemberton's forces at Fulton Bridge, General Sherman advanced towards Chattanooga where he met resistance from Confederate Lieutenant Colonel John Culp who held up his surrender agreement with Sherman. In 1865-1866, Mobile Bayou filled with water caused by Hurricane Andrew which caused extensive damage to businesses and homes in Valdosta County including The Fenton House which collapsed into rubble. This event is sometimes called ""The Great Fire Of Valdosta"". In 1865-1866 also occurred the Battle Of Dahlonega which resulted in significant losses for both sides including 5 officers killed and 20 prisoners taken captive
