In 1861, the United States of America voted to annex the Mexican state of Texas. In 1867, a bill was introduced in Congress to make all firearms including pistols and revolvers illegal within 100 miles of any city or town with a population over 10,000. The measure was passed by Congress but vetoed by President Andrew Johnson. In 1868, Congress passed the Gun Control Act which made it a felony for anyone under the age of 21 to possess any type of firearm without a license. It also regulated ammunition sales and gave manufacturers an opportunity to sell their products only through licensed dealers. The Gun Control Act expired in 19 U.S.C § 922(a) on January 3, 1970.
When the first Europeans arrived in Valdosta, Georgia in 1753 they were met with hostility. The native people, the Chickasaws, had been living in this area for centuries and were very hostile to the newcomers. However, over time the Europeans began to learn about the culture and language of the Chickasaws and started to work them out some trade agreements. In 1802 Spanish missionaries came to Valdosta and began converting the local Indians to Christianity. This change also led to a new influx of white settlers into Valdosta, as well as a rise in social tensions between Native Americans and European colonists. In 1812 Governor John Capps ordered all Native Americans east of the Apalachicola River be removed from Georgia. This order was followed by an even larger effort known as "The Removal" which drove more than 250 000 native people from their homes across Georgia over four years. Many died trying to cross the river or were executed when they reached other states. In 1815 General Andrew Jackson was elected president of the United States after winning a series of landslides that left many western states without representation in Congress. As president he signed Executive Order #9236 which ordered all Indian tribes within five miles of any federal office to be removed within 24 hours or face forcible removal. This order caused great outrage among both Native Americans and European colonists who felt that their rights had been violated. After his presidency Jackson toured eastern North America and returned home in 1818 convinced that American expansion should continue westward instead of looking at ways to comply with Executive Order 9236. He appointed James Kroupa as secretary at war with instructions to remove all Cherokee nationals living on Indian Territory (modern day Alabama) without their consent or compensation according to treaty provisions.. The Cherokees resisted until Federal troops marched into their villages accompanied by artillery fire on July 20th,1819 under orders from General Scott.# This event is generally considered one of history's largest military operations against indigenous people yet it remains largely unknown due largely to lack of documentation combined with obstructionism by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency (#27).
