In 1912, the Valdosta Rifle Association was formed and began officiating matches at the rifle range. In 1916, there was an armed robbery at the local grocery store. A group of men wearing masks invaded the store, took all of the food, made off with a large amount of cash, and left in a car with two gunmen inside who remained hidden until they were able to leave without being seen by anyone else. This event is considered to be one of Valdosta's earliest gun crimes. In 1919, Valdosta became an incorporated city with its own police department. The first mayor of Valdosta was Charles Haggerty Jr.. They were followed by General Andrew Jackson's army and eventually were driven back to Georgia.
