The first permanent European settlement in what is now Union City was made in 1784 by Captain James Cook and his crew on an island off the coast of Georgia while exploring the southeastern US for new land to explore and claim as their own. Cook's men built cabins and made salt water ponds to store food and supplies for their journey home, providing initial sustenance for future pioneers who would come after them. The town that developed around Cook's original settlement may have been named "Union" following a shipwreck on nearby Savannah Bay which left its passengers numbering twenty-four (the most ever registered with American Ports) stranded there until they were rescued by HMS Erebus on November 11, 1786. The captain and crew of HMS Erebus generously gave each passenger supper ashore before sailing back to England without further incident or damage; henceforth "Union" became synonymous with being safe from possible pirate attacks on ships travelling through those waters. In 1814 Union City was chartered as the capital of newly formed Cherokee Nation under Ulysses S Grant during his tenure as President of the United States; it served as such until Cherokee Nation dissolved in 1830 amidst various tensions over land issues across America culminating in Creek War (1835-1841). In 1836 Union City became part of newly created Fulton County when that portion of Georgia was split off from Cobb County.
