Union City, Georgia is a town in Union County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The name for Union City comes from its location on the Chattahoochee River as well as its close proximity to Savannah and Augusta. The first settler in Union City was James Whitehead who moved there in 1814 from Aberdeen, Scotland. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now Washington Street. James Whitehead's grandson John Whitehead started the first store in Union City in 1822 and it served as the nucleus of what would become local businesses for many years. In 1829, John Whitehead married Sarah Tucker and they started to operate a general store called "Whiteheads'. The couple operated their business until 1840 when they sold it to Wm Hargrave who renamed it "Hargrave-Tucker". In 1847, Benjamin Cook moved to Union City with his family from Decatur County, Georgia and opened a grocery store named "Cook's" which became one of the most successful grocery stores in south central Georgia. Cook ran this business until 1893 when he sold it to JF Weems who operated it until 1951 when he sold it to Bud Walton Jr., one of Walmart's co-founders. At that point Walmart became known as Walton-Weems although some parts of the company still remain under that name today (Walmart Supercenter).
