The first permanent European settlers in Union City were the McIntosh family who arrived in 1797. They erected a small log cabin on what is now Main Street. The town was named for General James Buford Union who fought during the American Revolution and received an encore pension from George Washington. In 1827, when Union City became part of newly created Baldwin County, it retained its original name but changed to "Union City." In 1840, Reva Lockwood founded Zion Baptist Church which remains one of the largest Protestant churches in central Alabama today with more than 10,000 members worshipping there every week. The influx of Chinamen caused significant social unrest initially with menial labor being offered free food and lodging while living atop facilities called “Houses Of Inspection” manned by guards wearing badges reading “Chinaman inspection”; later riots occurred outside these compounds whenever lower class whites encountered them while lessoning or playing football games outside...
