Union City, Georgia is a city in metro Atlanta, United States. The population was 153,813 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Fulton County and the eighth-largest city in the state of Georgia. The name "Union City" was given to it by General James Longstreet when he surveyed the area during the American Civil War. Union City is also home to two universities: Morehouse College and Spelman College. The first settlers in Union City were slaves who had been brought over from Africa when it became clear that Atlanta was going to be their new home. In 1815, John Randolph purchased 8 acres (3 ha) of land on what is now Peachtree Street from Nicholas Champion for $1,000. Randolph named his purchase "Randolph's Fork." He built a cabin on this land and began trading with Native Americans who lived around him in what is today Roswell Park Cemetery. In 1822, Randolph married Martha Washington Cobb and they moved to Union City where they started a small grocery store called "Martha's Store." They also opened a school for African Americans which taught them how to read and write. The couple raised six children; three daughters died young due to disease or accidents while three boys made their way into successful lives as teachers, lawyers, bankers and other prosperous citizens of Atlanta. In 1830, Martha bought more land adjacent to her original property - this time for $4 per acre (0·96 ha). She named her new acquisition "Union Station." With enough land acquisitions under his belt, Randolph decided he would build a larger railroad station thanAtlanta's existing ones – one that could handle more passengers arriving simultaneously from different parts of America via steamboats on Lake Lanier (now known as Windermere). Union Station would become an essential part of Atlantans' social life – both west of downtown along Piedmont Avenue NW until it burned down in 1871 and east across Clifton Road NE until it too went out of business in 1916. Captain Samuel Henschel leased space at Union Station from Jno Biddle Company starting on May 1st 1835 for use as mercantile warehouses before finally purchasing it outright on December 31st 1850s becoming owner/operator thereof until January 1865 when he merged with Foote & Beal Warehouse Co., Incorporated becoming Henschel Brothers Warehouse Company Limited which continued operations through 1974 although its main warehouse building located at 404 Ponce de Leon Ave SW has since been torn down .
