It is named after the Uniontown Plantation on the Chattahoochee River which was founded by General James McDonough and his family in 1795. The city was founded in 1801 as a small town on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River near what is now Decatur Avenue and Eight Mile Road. In 1825, it became a county seat and remained so until 1871 when it became an incorporated town under Federal jurisdiction. The first store in Union City opened in 1825, just south of present-day Peachtree Street between Marietta Boulevard and Abercorn Street. By 1830, there were over 60 businesses operating within two miles (3 km) of where Union City now stands. In 1836, Union City became one of several newly formed counties within Georgia due to political pressure from southern states that were hostile to slavery. The county courthouse was built on Main Street in downtown Union City and served as its center for government until Reconstruction began in 1865 when state officials moved it to Milledgeville following the Civil War. The courthouse burned down in 1890 but was replaced by a new structure in 1915 known as Main Justice Hall which still serves as the municipal headquarters today In 1870, local entrepreneur John Ahern organized a group of investors who purchased 584 acres (225 hectares) along portions of what are now Decatur Avenue and Eight Mile Road from William Mercer for $1 million dollars (). These land purchases formed the nucleus around which future development occurred; most notably with construction on Peachtree Street beginning shortly thereafter After years of growth come rapid social changes during World War II; according to some sources more than 1,000 Japanese Americans living within reach700 men working at various munitions plants located inside or outside of town also helped contribute to wartime production Examples include: Japantown Naval Ammunition Depot - producing ammunition for Navy ships off Athens shore while also housing Japanese American workers who constructed roads and other infrastructure; Paulding Army Air Field - home base for bombers including B-29s flown into combat over Japan during Operation Coronet Welcome Home Gardens - developed using wartime materials available at nearby Arlington Cemetery into what would become one of Atlanta's largest greenhouses unable to operate because they lacked adequate space later becoming an energy company ); all told these developments led directly or indirectly to increased employment opportunities for locals not only during wartime but well into peacetime . In fact postwar suburbanization actually accelerated job growth rates among African American residents although white flightrates did increase somewhat
