Dickey's son-in-law, General Nathan Bedford Forrest (1815–1913), purchased land south of Union City from Jno. Forrest erected a cabin near present day Huff Road and Patterson Street in 1830. He named the settlement "Forrest Station" after himself but it soon became known as Union City because of its location within the limits of the newly formed Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861– 1865). Union City residents voted to secede from Georgia on February 14th 1861 while Confederate forces were still occupying Atlanta. The question of whether or not to secede was decided by military commanders rather than citizens due to widespread fear among many that secession would lead to war with other states such as South Carolina and Alabama which were also considering secession. Union City residents remained within Chatham County through the war until December 1865 when they were forced out by Confederate troops under General Jubal Early into nearby Fulton County where they continued to live until 1870 when all Union City inhabitants turned over their property to Georgia authorities upon evacuation order from Chattanooga pursuant to the Compromise of 1877 which ended slavery throughout much of America including Georgia
