Union City is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 509 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The downtown district includes most of the city's commercial and cultural attractions. The first Europeans to visit Union City were traders and missionaries from Spain in 1699. In 1821, Union City became a town when the federal government established a post office here. It rose rapidly during the 1830s as cotton ginners, farmers, and merchants moved into the central business district around what is now State Street and McNair Avenue. By 1840 Union City had over 1,000 residents and was known as "the most lively place in all of Georgia". In 1846 Union City became an incorporated village under state law following approval by its citizens via referendum; this occurred despite objections from nearby Marietta due to their belief that incorporation would lead to increased taxation without representation for themselves on local government councils. During Reconstruction Union City thrived as an important center of black political activity; African Americans formed numerous businesses and artesian wells were drilled for water supply until after World War I when they lost many jobs to white industrialization. In 1919-1920 union CITY HALL served as world's first permanent Negro entertainment complex with concerts by Bessie Smith and other stars (this event also helped start modern jazz). After years of decline during the late 20th century economic strife led to violence in town – including three shootings that killed five people between 1990-1992 – before finally bottoming out in recent years with few major incidents reported until gunfire erupted last year outside a small grocery store on State Street Downtown which left one person dead

This development helped spur economic development within the community and help it become known as an important node in southern U S society. During Reconstruction era (1868-1912), Union City played an important role in efforts to promote racial harmony within Southern United States. Many African Americans who had worked or lived here during this time moved into larger northern cities during this time frame while many white residents shifted their allegiance to Republican Party ideals during this time period
Union City was a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. It was located on the east side of the city limits of Atlanta and was adjacent to the community of Roswell. The first settlers in Union City were James Waddell and his family, who arrived from Connecticut in 1795. They built a log cabin near what is now corner of Pryor and Depot streets. The Waddells had four children: John (1796-1868), Susannah (1802-1872), Isaiah (1804-1870) and Mary Jane (1800-1892). In 1819, the elder Waddell married Martha Webb, daughter of James Webb Sr., one of the original owners of what is now Roswell. The Webers moved to Union City from rural Rowan County,Georgia in 1824. In 1827, Union City became part of Atlanta when Atlanta was founded as a new settlement by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and others. In 1830, Samuel Pemberton purchased land within what is now Union Citylimits; he built a business called "Pemberton's Mill". In 1832, Pemberton sold his interests in the mill to Aiken & Cobb Co., which operated it until 1865 when it merged with Peachtree Coal & Coke Company to form Turner Coal & Coke Company. The mill building still stands today on Pryor Street within the boundaries of Union City proper. In 1835–36, Captain John Smith explored and mapped much of what is now Fulton County for the United States government during its westward expansion through Georgia. While living in Union City circa 1840–51 with his wife Sarah Ann Smith; they also raised their five children there: John David Jr., Sarah Eliza Smith (baptized July 6th 1840 – died May 9th 1906), Jemima Augusta Cooksberry(baptized June 1st 1842 – died November 5th 1912), Franklin Morris Smith(born October 2nd 1850 – died January 5th 1916) and Annie Julia Elizabeth Smith(born December 15th 1853 – died March 14th 1939). After leaving active military service at Appomattox Court House on April 12 1861 he took up residence at Mrs Hartsfield's house near Decatur Street where he continued working on maps until 1865 while engaged in law practice at One large building across from MARTA station known then as Farmers' Store Place Now Candler Road East Side Of Station . From this location he could see many points south into Atlantica including Sandy Springs [now Gwinnett], Druid Hills [now Perimeter Mall], Dunwoody [now MidtownAtlanta]and other towns that would become partsofthe metropolitan area during Reconstruction years followingCivil War America's greatest reconstruction period since Reconstruction days following World War II
Union City, Georgia is a city in Troup County, Georgia. The population was 9,811 at the 2000 census. Union City is located on the Flint River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa). The city of Union City was founded in 1853 by Scots-Irish settlers as part of what would become Clayton County. On July 4th, 1868, Union City became the first municipality in Troup County when it merged with adjoining Jonesboro to form a new consolidated township. In 1912, Union City annexed the neighboring town of Athens and became an independent municipality. In 1959 Center Point Shopping Center was built on former military site in downtown Union City which provides retail space for over 100 stores and restaurants including Gander Mountain Outfitters and Sears & Roebuck across oneacre of land south of I-285 exit 129A.
