The cotton ginxed by John Atherton employed more than 1,000 workers during the late 1800s and early 1900s; however production dropped after World War I due to technology advances. After World War II cotton production increased again due to immigration from southern Europe and Asia. Today Union City's economy remains largely agricultural with some light manufacturing operations

Union City, an unincorporated community in Fulton County, Georgia, is located on the upper Chattahoochee River. The community was founded by men from Tennessee in 1819 as a landing for goods brought overland from the Carolinas. The first post office was established in 1825. Union City became a municipality in 1888 and has since been represented in the Georgia General Assembly by two members. The town was laid out on a gridiron plan and named after the union of five townships in Fulton County: Allatoona, Amherst, Athens, Buford, and Union. In 1819, surveyors identified four points along the Chattahoochee River at which they thought it would be possible to set up shop as traders and processors of goods coming overland from the South Carolina Lowcountry. ettlement began quickly at these points and within two years there were more than 20 people living hereabouts under charter from John Troup of Chattanooga. By 1830, trade was brisk enough that a store had been built and a school opened; soon residents were buying land parcels large enough to support their own families. In 1831-32 local officials organized what is now known as the First Union Congress of Georgians to solicit contributions for building an Arsenal or arsenal station near present-day Union City proper on shoals between Fort Gaines (now Tallahassee) on Lake George and NAS Pensacola Bayou (now Donnybrook Creek). This event marked one significant step forward in developing commercial relations with neighboring states during what would become known asthe American Revolution era. The town's population grew steadily throughout this period until about 1840 when increasing numbers of Scots-Irish immigrants started arriving; these newcomers soon clashed with Methodists who wanted them to adopt their Irish culture rather than mix with Americans. This tension led to several riots throughout early 19th century Georgia – one such outbreak took place at Union City's Wharf Landing where 400 Thomsonians (Irish Catholics) rioted against 300 English Protestants who had gathered there for fishing tackle demonstrations just weeks before Christmas 1829. In 1836 Union City became part of newly formed Cobb County following its creation from Sumter District 2 west of Atlanta; however its growth stalled due largely to lack of available land east of I-285/I-85 – an issue that would continue to dog Cobb County until well into the 20th century. During Reconstruction times many African Americans moved into Union City seeking work opportunities on plantations managed by white landowners; however relatively few made it past being fingerprinted and registered with local government authorities prior to moving permanently into the community (some did eventually return home). Afterward most black residents continued working off plantation jobs while some Braxton Hicks natives migrated back northward into settlement areas around Valdosta or Macon Counties according to various family lore traditions handed down through successive generations thereof
