After the war ended, Union City experienced a period of rapid growth that saw it become one of Georgia's most important economic centers. During this time, Union City developed into one of America's most prosperous cities overall with a thriving economy based largely on manufacturing activity such as textiles, automobiles (the first ever produced in America), shoesmithing/fashioning products such as belts and suspenders (which helped solidify Standard Oil's dominance over Atlanta), food production (such as peanut butter/jelly), engineering work (particularly in water technology), health care services (including hospitals such as Grady Memorial Hospital) and professional services (such as law enforcement). But althoughThroughout much of these years there was great progress being made - jobs were created; rents went up; homes got larger - things stopped changing slowly for all but a very small number of people who controlled everything inside city limits...
