In 1868, Confederate General Robert Ewell visited Union City and ordered his men to burn all buildings in the town including churches and homes of black civilians. Only one black resident remained alive when hostilities ended two years later: Nicholas Slaughterhouse, an enslaved man who helped operate a mills in nearby Royalton. Slaughterhouse returned to live with his family members until he died at age 97 in 2002 from natural causes at their home near the naval yard site where he had been born more than 150 years earlier Union City's economy has traditionally been based on fishing and farming although some manufacturing has taken place such as clothing factories during World War II when local farmers produced uniforms for American troops In recent years Union City has seen increased development due to its location within close proximity to both Savannah River National Wildlife Refuge and Savannah State University which have resulted in new businesses opening up as well as increased housing prices Today, Union City remains an important center for cultural life with several restaurants and bars making it easy for locals to enjoy good food while being close enough to see everything that's happening around them

The area that would become Union City was first settled in 1811 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named their land for a local river crossing. In 1819, the Scots-Irish immigrants were joined by African Americans who had come to work on railroads west of Atlanta. By 1830, Union City had a population of 350 people and it grew rapidly during the early years of the nineteenth century as cotton plantations were established in nearby counties. In 1839, Union City became an incorporated village with one vote per household and it remained an unincorporated rural community until 1951 when it became an incorporated city. Union City’s history can be traced back to 1819 when white settlers arrived in what would become Clarke County, Georgia searching for new land to settle. Many of these pioneers were former slaves who had been freed following the American Civil War. After arriving in this new region they began construction on several homes and businesses including a mill which still stands today. This mill was one of many commercial ventures started by these early settlers and helped support their families while they awaited resettlement elsewhere after the war ended. The growth of Union City continued through the 1840s as more cotton plantations were erected along nearby riverside towns such as Marietta and Kennesaw Junction. By 1850, there were 1,500 people living within two miles of Union City proper and this growth was due largely to immigration from Europe – especially from Ireland – which increased trade between America and Europe during this time period. Unfortunately, however, economic conditions began to worsen during this decade as stricter policies related to slavery led to increasing numbers of Africans being imported into America (a practice known as “ Half-Breedry”). As wages for slave labor decreased throughout most parts of Americaduring this time period, large sections of Southern society came increasingly dependent upon black laborers for various industrial tasks including farming and manufacturing.. Thus begins what would be known asthe Great Famine among Native Americans across North America during the late eighteenth century; at least 10%of all Indian Populations perished due specificallyto European diseases brought over via slave ships.. During Reconstruction following reconstruction edict issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865 aimed at improving public order following civil unrest across South Carolina & Alabama following Reconstruction ceremonies conducted at Danbury Plantation near Chattanooga,, much effort was made towards Negro integration within white society although progress was slow due primarilyto racist attitudes among some whites.. For example:In 1870 alone African Americans formed only 2%of all unionized workers but managed 35%of total voting power within Georgia state legislature; nonetheless they languished behind whites both politically & economically .. However events beginning with Tom Watson’s political revolution inside Democratic Party startingin1871 soon changed all that; rapid Black voter turnout ensuingin wide rangeOf General Elections culminatingin1875 congressional election whereBlack filled 31%of House seats & 36%of Senate seats ..
