Union City is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Union City is located on the Chattahoochee River and has a downtown area with numerous shops and restaurants. The town was founded in 1821 by General George Washington Wilkinson as a result of his demand for goods from slaves working on his plantation north of Union City. The first store opened in 1825, and by 1830 there were five stores in the town. In 1836 Union City became an incorporated municipality under the name of Athens. From its incorporation until 1959, Union City had two mayors: John Pemberton (1859-1861) and Isaac Brock (1861-1863). The cotton gin moved to Union City from Athens in 1861, beginning what would be known as what is now called "the renaissance" of the cotton industry in Georgia; during this time Union City grew rapidly becoming one of the most important towns in south Fulton County. Many successful businesses were established during this time including: Jourdan's restaurant which still stands today; Baxter Brewing Company which began production in 1899; Coca Cola Bottling plant built 1909; First National Bank building built 1917; and many other businesses that continue to operate to this day including: Applebees Restaurant & Brewery - closed 1997; Smyrna Ice Cream - closed 2007; KFC - closed 2000

Finally after World War I ended and America entered into another era of prohibitionvironing policies changed which led to a decline in business activity which finally reversed starting in 1925 *. In 1935-1950s Hispanics replaced whites as majorities within local unions** (*) However during these years black union members dominated labor membership ***. Since 1850 there have been various waves of immigration from southern Europe which has led to mixed race relationships among locals The end result has been drastic social changes with some residents becoming more diverse than others(*),***.*
