Union City, Georgia is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 6,032 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The community was founded by planters in 1824 as a small farming village near what is now Sandy Springs. The name Union City was chosen because it would be one block from the main depot on the Savannah and Western Railroad. By 1860, Union City had become an important cotton center with a steam-powered cotton gin and two sawmills. In 1865, Union City became the seat of government for Jackson County when that county was divided into two parts based on racial lines created during the American Civil War. In 1875, Union City became home to America's first optical store when John Davenport opened his business at Fourth Street and Broad Avenue. Davenport was an early backer of stereoscopic photography and developed some of the first crude glasses used for this purpose in New York City. His store continued to be operation until 1914 when it burned down; however, glass still exists today at Third Street and Broad Avenue where Davenport once operated his business again as a department store before he died in 1928.

It grew rapidly due to its location on the Savannah River and its access to transportation including ferries and steamboats that transported goods between Atlanta and Charleston. In 1849, Union City became an independent city with its own government and police force under Mayor James Aiken. In 1861 during the American Civil War, Union City sided with the Confederacy against Abraham Lincoln’s America First movement. After ConfederateGeneral Braxton Bragg destroyed much of downtown Union City on April 12th 1865 while besieging Fort Sumter in what is now Augusta County (the Battle of Independence Hall took place two days earlier), Mayor Aiken requested US forces destroy all evidence of Confederate defeat so that “There should be no Tullahoma Cemetery for them [Confederates] Among us there can never be any bury[ing] where they might hereafter reproach themselves!” On May 10th 1865 – less than one week after Confederate General Robert E Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House – Union City again lost their most important landmark; when Federal troops burned down The Capitol building which served as their headquarters for almost three years before being captured by Confederates in 1865. However even today some bricks still remain from this time period which can be found inside The Capitol Building’s walls near where current day elevator buttons are located
