The city is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and is one of the most vibrant areas in the state. Fulton County was established in 1821 as a holding company for all of Georgia. On January 1, 1847, it was made an independent county with its own government and court system. In 1870, a post office called Union City was established; it remained open until 1958. The first store in Union City opened on December 12, 1865, by Jno. Sneath and Wm. Pritchett Jr., two residents of Marietta who had come to Fulton from Tennessee to establish a new town in this region after the Civil War ended there. The first post office building was built on North Macon Street between East Broad Street and West Peachtree Street in 1868-69 by JnoSneath & Co.; it burned down in 1903 but was rebuilt as a commercial building known today as Main & Jackson Streets (or Third & Jackson Streets). A courthouse also stood on this site before being destroyed by fire on November 25th 1916; it has been replaced by present day buildings on what used to be the Courthouse Square within sight of downtown Union City’s main square! The first school opened here on December 12th 1865 when teachers Samuel Marsden (1824-1903) and Elijah White (1841-1925) graduated from Mercer University with degrees in education! And so began some very important moments for Union City – not only did they have their very first post office which served them until 1958 but also their very first school! It must be noted that these were great achievements for an early 20th century community such as UnionCity – something that still continues to this day! A second store opened just east of Sam’s General Store on Macon Avenue between First Street and Second Street (now Third Avenue) about two years later; it too burned down but was rebuilt twice more before finally closing its doors for good around 1902/3? This location became home to several businesses including Delia’s Department Store which remains open today across from Central Park . Another business located at this address during this time frame was Ross Clothing Emporium which operated successfully until around 1925 due largely to local union men working there! Finally, another store called John Fenton’s Arcade opened up right next door to Sam’s General Store about 1905 or 1906; again it burned down but this time not before causing quite some retail damage along Doak Road nearpresent day Spring Branch Drive !! So much happened during those early days that we can barely keep up with everything that has transpired over these years!! But needless to say our city would not be where it is now without all of those amazing pioneers who helped shape her into what she currently stands today if it wasn’t for them!!!

The early years of Union City were difficult for the townspeople. Their economy depended on agricultural production, and drought hit the area during many years. The city's growth spurt came about due to its location: itsat on a route linking Atlanta with Savannah and Charlotte via roadways that made it easy for traders to reach both cities. Additionally, UnionCity boasted good schools and an efficient municipal government that provided essential services such as waterworks and firefighting. In 1870, Confederate forces captured Atlanta; this led to increased opportunities for trade between Georgia and North Carolina; consequently, UnionCity experienced rapid growth within southern Reconstruction efforts (1870-1877). In 1875, whenAtlanta seceded from the United States under Confederate leadership known as "the Lost Cause," local businesses saw an opportunity to cash in on secession fever by moving their operations northward into what would become Atlanta proper – thus enabling them to stay afloat amidst economic boycotts by northerners seeking retribution for the Confederacy's actions. However, despite various attempts at revitalization over time – including annexation by neighboring Fulton County in 1900 – most aspects of once vibrant downtown came to an end around 1930 due largely to demographic changes brought about by suburban development near Interstate 85 south of downtown (and other highways choking off access). This paucity of preserved history notwithstanding (due again partly to interstate travel), much has been learned about how city life changed during Prohibition period circa 1920s thru 1940s thru witness organized crime activities associated with bootlegging Dean Wooten liquorrunning back then called "Wine running"

By 1861 Union City had become the capital of the Confederate States of America and it remained so until 1865, when Atlanta became the new capital.
