Union City, Georgia is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia, United States, and the seat of Union City County. The population was 27,812 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1881 by white farmers from Tennessee as an agricultural settlement on the Chattahoochee River. The economy of Union City has been based largely on agriculture since its founding. Manufacturing and service sectors have played major roles in the city's economy since the late 20th century. In recent years, Union City has seen a resurgence in its role as a center for conservative politics and libertarianism. Union City is a small town in Gwinnett County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Union City was founded in 1827 by men from what is now Decatur and Paulding counties. The town was originally named "Centralia," but because of its location on the base of a mountain, Centralia became known as "The Top." In 1885, Union City merged with neighboring Decatur to form one municipality. In 1906, Union City annexed the adjacent unincorporated community of Stone Mountain. On July 15, 1971, Union City again amalgamated with Decatur to form another municipality - this time called Uniondale. Finally on December 3rd, 2000 (the date that conglomeration occurred), Union City merged with Douglasville to form Douglas County. Union City is located at (33.898692,-81.924695). According to the USGS National Geodetic Survey: "The elevation above sea level for all places within city limits [was] 711 feet (233 m)." As a result of this elevation change over time - specifically due to human activities such as farming and building - many streets and other public amenities have been raised or lowered in height and width throughout the city since its founding in 1827: - Main Street has been widened from two lanes wide at its original crossing point near the courthouse entrance until it's now four lanes wide; - A bypass street has been built connecting downtown with much of eastern side; - There has also been an increase in housing developments throughout central and eastern parts of town; - Many private businesses have moved into new buildings or replaced their older ones since 2000 when Douglas County formed - including hospitals such as Grady Memorial Hospital and St Francis Hospital; - At least one high school has moved out of town altogether during that same time period - Grady High School which closed in 2002 after more than 40 years in operation; - One major shopping mall exists within city limits today though it had only begun development when Douglas County formed - The Mall at Pierce Park which opened in 2001 after being planned by former county chairman Lester Maddox himself;
