Tifton was founded by General James Robertson in 1802 as a small trading post on the Chattahoochee River. Tifton grew quickly because of its location and its access to transportation, including an railroad that connected it with Atlanta. The first school in Tifton was built in 1836 and served both black and white children. In 1865, Tifton became the capital of Georgia when Governor George Stephens moved the state capital from Augusta to Tifton. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union General Jubal Early invaded Georgia with 1,500 men and 8 cannons while marching through central Georgia on his way to join Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Savannah. Early's forces were met by Confederate militia led by Major General John Crampton at Kennesaw Mountain; however, Early's force did not retreat until after midnight on April 14th before withdrawing into nearby Mexico City Cemetery where he died two days later from his injuries sustained during the battle. In 1862, after Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked Fort Stewart in northeast Alabama (the first major engagement of the war), Union Colonel William Tecumseh Sherman ordered all troops within five miles of Chattanooga to cross over the Tennessee River into Chattanooga so they could fight under him instead of against Grant's army north of town. A steamboat carrying Sherman's command crossed over on September 15th and entered downtown Chattanooga for what would be known as "The crossing." As soon as troops disembarked from their boats (legally required by regulation), gunfire erupted from all directions as skirmishers began firing into buildings near Grant's headquarters inside Fort Donelson which had been captured earlier that day following heavy fighting outside the fortifications between Confederates and Federal troops commanded by Major-[n/a]
