Tifton, GA is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 31,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and the home to Tifton State University. The first European settlers in what is now Tifton were Frenchmen who arrived in 1763. They founded a small town on the banks of the Chattahoochee River and named it after their patron saint, Thomas Tifton (14th century English bishop of Winchester). The town quickly outgrew its original site and was relocated numerous times until it finally located at present-day downtown Tifton in 1875. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army from Selma to Atlanta and called on local citizens to provide arms and munitions for him. Many men from around Atlanta gathered at what is now Fourth Street south of Court House Square for what became known as "Fornication Day." At this event Forrest distributed firearms to those who contributed them. One man who helped organize this gathering was Johnnie Grier (1822-1910), an African American lawyer and cotton planter from nearby Decatur who became one of Forrest's most trusted lieutenants during his expansion into newly freed black areas of central Georgia. Grier also began organizing a militia force which he referred to as "the Hebrews" because many of its members were Jewish immigrants from Russia or Lithuania who had managed to escape anti-Semitism in their homeland before reaching North America. The Hebrews intermittently fought against Confederate forces during the war but ultimately surrendered when Sherman's Union armies came through Georgia unchallenged in 1865. From 1865 until 1875, when downtown Tifton was platted, there were six different churches operating within walking distance of each other – First Baptist Church on Second Street east of Court House Square; Methodist Episcopal Church on Third Street north of Court House Square; Presbyterian Church on Fourth Street south of Court House Square; Baptist Churches/Episcopal Churches on Fifth Avenue west side between Third Street and First Street; German Baptist church/Congregationalist church/Italianate Catholic church/First CongregationalistChurch/Second CongregationalistChurch on Sixth Avenue east side between First Street and Second Streets; all denominations sharing one common building: Christ Presbyterian Church (now Gibson Hall). In 1875 however, Methodists built their own brick church which still stands today atop Courthouse Hill near Park Avenue northeast corner with Center Boulevard east center block . . . . A new school district was created effective January 1st 1870 with Schools #1 & 2 located at 4th & Main Streets NW Corner Greenwood Ave NW School District #3 opened 7 years later circa 1900 along with Jefferson Davis High School East Campus shoe store fronts fourth street between state avenue NE corner with park avenue SW corner providing parking lot for students
