The Tifton, Georgia history includes the events that took place in the city from the 1800s to the present day. The city was named after General James Tifton, who fought in the American Revolution. The city was first settled by DeKalb County in 1814. In 1865, Tifton became a part of Fulton County. In 1898, Tifton was incorporated as a town. In 1934, Tifton was renamed for General Joe Johnston. The city has experienced many changes over the years and today is an important center for education and commerce.
Tifton is a small town in the Georgia Southern University System in central Georgia. The population was 5,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of Jonesboro-based Fulton County. The first inhabitants of Tifton were the Creek Indians, who lived along the Chattahoochee River until they were forced out by white settlers in 1813. A school was built in 1817 and called "Moses Hargrave's School". In 1830, Tifton became a village with a post office and three churches. In 1837, Tifton had 1,500 residents and two schools; one for boys and one for girls. The cotton gin began operations in 1840 and soon became an important economic factor in the community. By 1850, there were 11 businesses with over 100 employees; four banks with $10,000 or more assets each; six stores; two hotels; one doctor's office; two blacksmiths; one newspaper publisher (the "Tifton Republican"); and three teacher's unions (the "National Union of Teachers of Georgians"), which represented about 60% of all teachers working inGeorgia at that time. In 1865, Gauss College assumed operation as Georgia Southern University from Pembroke State Normal School on what is now Eastern Parkway Drive within walking distance of campus. The college continued to grow rapidly during its early years – it had only 250 students when it opened its doors on October 16th, 1865 – but it could not support itself financially alone so Gaussian Brothers & Company donated land next to their mill to build what would become today’s main campus building: buildings 7 through 11 on First Street between Pryor Road and Park Avenue NW.). Classes started on January 8th 1870 under Rev Dr James Waddell as assistant professor of mathematics & mechanics at GSU before becoming an associate professor effective July 1st 1870 under Prof John Daynes (pictured). On November 15th 1870 enrollment reached 927 students following approval by the state Board of Education! A new library building was completed adjacent to First Street between Pryor Road NWand Park Avenue NWin 1895 using funds from a bequest from Mrs Fannie Hawkins Johnson (see photo top right). A second new library building was constructed adjacent to Third Street between Pryor Road NEand Park Avenue NEin 1902 using funds from Mrs Anna Bowman Dorman (see photo bottom right). During World War I both these buildings sustained damage but were repaired quickly without having any loss of faculty or student life due to wartime disruption . On September 24th 1925 GSU discovered uranium ore near Battle Mountain outsideof town limits after testing indicated high levels near surface water sources suitable for mining however no formal mining commenced until 1946 when explosives detonated KYWU-TV images show large amount off road just south side property line bordering woods
