Tifton is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and the home to Tifton College. The first buildings in what would become Tifton were built on the east side of Broad Street in 1811 by Elijah Hicks and his family. In 1816, John Crain bought land adjacent to Broad Street and began building a cotton gin and mill. The Crain family operated their business until 1889 when they sold it to J.C. Hopkins & Co., which continued to run it until 1919 when it merged with other companies to form J.C. Hopkins Trust Company Limited Partnership whose main offices are located in Tifton today (the original buildings still stand). In 1824, James Moultrie purchased 1/4 acre (0.18 km²) of land south of present day Main Street from John Pritchett for $225 USD which he used as his farmstead until 1850 when he donated it to Tifton College for use as an agricultural education center known as "Moultrie's Farm". Moultrie also founded one of the first banks in Georgia – The Bank of Commerce – at this location in 1825. It wasn't until 1830 that work started on creating a courthouse square near where Main Street meets Court Square Boulevard that would eventually be called "Moultrie Square" after him. This project was completed by 1835 but due to financial problems within the company, including several bankruptcies, only two courts were ever built: One inside Moultrie Square and one outside on CourtSquare Boulevard (now part of University Avenue). The courthouse square project failed again in 1840 but severe weather during construction caused extensive damage which required major reconstruction which finally resulted in the completion of both courthouses in 1851-53 under new management by Captial Engineer Samuel Whitfield who named them "Whitfield's Courthouse" after himself and his then wife Elizabeth Whitfield who helped finance them. Although most visitors now focus on visiting Tifton College or its associated facilities such as Main Street shops or Courts Square Boulevard attractions, much older history can be found here too through artifacts and photos dating back over 200 years! For example, you can explore some homes from before Atlanta became America's capital city thanks to local historian Dragan Djuranovic who has been working diligently restoring many historic properties throughout town since 2004; or take a look at some pre-war houses located just off Government Road NW next door to downtown Tifton!
Tifton is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 27,033 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to the Tifton Civic Center. The history of Tifton begins with three families who settled on a tract of land near what is now downtown Tifton in 1827. They named their new settlement "Tifton" after their farmstead in England. In 1830, they founded the town's first school and began construction on what would become its first courthouse. A fire destroyed most of the town's buildings in 1836 but the rebuilt building served as the town's central government building until it burned down in 1910. In 1838, Tifton acquired additional land from John Cushing for $1,000 which formed what is now known as Southside Square. In 1840, Tifton became an incorporated city with a Mayor/Council system and soon afterwards also began to build its own infrastructure including water works and sewer lines. Throughout this time period there were numerous businesses established throughout downtown Tifton including theaters (theatre One opened in 1865), grocery stores (Goudey's store opened in 1868), banks (First National Bank opened in 1870), hotels (The Hawthorne Hotelopenedin 1872) and more importantly churches (Starks Chapel was built by Revs John Witherspoon & James Hartsfield in 1886). After years of growth and development throughout his presidency Woodrow Wilson declared Downtown TIFTON an official National Historic District on October 5th, 1920 while he was President of America
