Tifton is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Tifton is located on the Chattahoochee River, about northeast of downtown Atlanta. The name "Tifton" first appeared on maps in 1796 and 1802 as "Tioga". In 1814, it was changed to "Tiftonsville", after General James Hogg's estate in what is now Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1824, it became again Tiftonsville when John Tift sold his estate to Abraham Baldwin for $2,000. In 1828–29, Tifton was occupied by three companies of U.S. forces under Major General Andrew Jackson for the purposes offortifying the road from Decatur to Athens and thence to Savannah; but no permanent building was erected until 1830 when the Court House Annex was built on what is now Main Street between Marietta Avenue and Spring Street East." The first post office in Tifton opened on May 1st, 1865 (the date still appears on postal cards). In 1870–71 an act was passed providing for a public square at centerpointof town which would be used as a meeting place for school trustees and other officials; this square has never been developed because of disagreements over where it should stand among various commercial enterprises that were built around it during ensuing years- one of which being First National Bank (now JPMorgan Chase) which sat across from today's library complex across from Third Street Baptist Church on Peachtree Road.. A new courthouse replaced the old one destroyed by fire in 1927 and served as the seat of government until 1959 when government moved out to more spacious quarters within what is now Gwinnett County Courthouse Complex on Midtown Parkway adjacent to Interstate 5A). In 1965–66 an addition was made to Municipal Hall which included a full size gymnasium with locker rooms/changing facilities and a video lounge/entertainment room/conference room capable of seating up to 100 people – all while remaining affordable by contemporary standards! The present day Municipal Hall annex can seat up to 350 people with its own kitchenette including ovens/microwave ovens as well as refrigerator space plus sitting areas for 100 or so guests inside or outside if there are not enough interior surfaces available indoors! Also included are two indoor tennis courts side by side with 50 ft.–long asphalt driveway leading them both into municipally landscaped park!! One could argue that this annex does not measure up comparably either aesthetically or functionally Nevertheless it’s still home away from home for most city residents who simply cannot afford their own municipal hall! On January 8th 1969 local Rotary Club member Jerry Pfleger along with others organized “First Day Back Home” parade consisting only of tributes paid specifically service members returning home since October 1st including military veterans & their families who had earlier deployed elsewhere After much anticipation community leaders scheduled street closures throughout downtown during event period allowing those who could get permission early accessto enjoy some lovely views before parade started proceedings Inside Municipal Hall annex during pre-parade function Various social events also took place such as chicken dinner club sponsored by Chamberlin’s Hardware store followed by dancing at Centennial Park outdoor amphitheater afterwards
