Tifton is part of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Tifton goes back to 1812 when it was founded as a small post office by Captain Augustus G. Wilkinson and his family. At that time, there were only 2 houses in town and no businesses or resident citizens. By 1840, Tifton had grown to over 100 people and had its own schoolhouse and Masonic Lodge. In 1871, Tifton became an incorporated municipality with 6 trustees and its first mayor was Jno PemberTONe Walton Sr.. In 1902–1903, during World War I, the city received munitions from Europe which gave it a boost in economic development; however due to wartime restrictions on American imports (the 1917 Jones Act), most of the industrial growth took place outside of town until after World War II when earnest efforts were made to bring back industry into town by creating new manufacturing locations such as Alcoa Aluminum Company’s aluminum smelters on Hwy 24 south of town—-resulting in numerous civic improvements such as library expansion and modernizing streetlights throughout town—-during which time many businesses moved away for lack of affordable housing or competition from larger metropolitan areas around Atlanta or Savannah. During my stay here last week I saw evidence that change is happening all around us everyday…..from changes in weather patterns that have caused more flooding this year than ever before……to protests taking place throughout our community against racism…………….to young people coming together to make their voices heard about social justice issues…..all these things are big steps forward for Tifton….and we can only wait to see what comes next!

Tifton, Georgia is a small town in the US state of Georgia. It is located in Tifton County and has a population of around 9,000 people. The town was founded by parents George and Anna Tifton in 1853. In 1907, the townsite was annexed by Atlanta. Tifton is named after the English town of Tibchester in Staffordshire, England which was also once a stopping place for travelers on the Underground Railroad. The name may have originated from an Indian word meaning "place where two paths meet." The first settler in Tifton was George Tifton who arrived with his family in 1853. He built a cabin on what is now Paulding Street. The first school in Tifton was built near Brickyard Road and operated from 1855 to 1862. In 1907, Atlanta annexed Tifton into its city limits and the schools were discontinued; however, the buildings still stand today used as community center or other uses. In 1919, during World War I, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his headquarters from Chattanooga to nearby Decatur to join up with other Confederate Generals south of the border at Mound Hill Farmington Hills MI., thus beginning what would become known as Operation Nashville (a plan designed to move American soldiers away from Germany). 1939 saw another annexation when Jackson County merged into Fulton County; however this annexation did not take effect until 1965 due to legal issues surrounding Jackson County's creation as part of Fulton County only five years earlier! The population peaked at 11,750 during the early 1960s before slowly decrease throughout most of that decade due to both rural exodus caused by loss of jobs and falling birth rates among African Americans withinAtlanta proper- primarily due to integration efforts conducted by blacks withinAtlanta itself- making it difficult for whites outside Atlanta to maintain ties with their old hometown even while portions continued being served by black residents through various municipal services such as schools and health clinics
