The area that would become Tifton was first settled by African Americans in the early 1800s as part of what became Druid Hillsborough County. In 1848, it was incorporated as Athens Township, and within a year had a population of 1,500 people. In 1856, Athens Township was renamed Tifton after Colonel John Tifton who served with General Andrew Jackson during the Mexican–American War. In 1870, due to an increase in cotton production in nearby Atlantica City (now Duluth), Athens Township changed its name to "DeKalb" and annexed much of Fulton County including present-day Tifton. By 1880, when white settlement began to trickle into what would become DeKalb County from around eastern Georgia and Alabama due to railroad construction, there were only about 350 residents living in Athens Township while 4500 lived within Atlanta proper limits. By 1920 there were over 10 thousand people living withinAtlanta proper limits as well as parts of Fulton and Gwinnett Counties now constituent parts of Georgia; however most Athenians still resided near their homes on Piedmont Avenue NE between Peachtree Street NW and Dunwoody Road NW for transportation reasons or proximity to churches or businesses that could provide jobs for locals during slow times such as prohibition or World War I shortages (both). In 1930 AJC created its own newsstand chain which quickly outgrew AJC's printing plant across Peachtree Street from then on becoming known simply as The Atlanta Journal News Company until it folded in 1984 after 40 years print journalism in metro Atlanta). During most all these decades newspapers like AJC were dominant players with other forms such as radio broadcasting taking up some slack while downtown storefronts gradually saw less retail development until today’s “downtown” areas are primarily residential/commercial corridors with few if any remnants of old newspaper buildings save for occasional small commercial ventures along side major interstate highways like I-285/I-5 with their numerous high-end hotels/motels etc., making it difficult if not impossible truly explore what made “Downtown” so unique other than some scattered mentions here and there throughout history books about various annexation processes that took place over time without really giving readers a good sense about how things have evolved over time or why certain aspects remain important today despite recent gentrification efforts both inside/outside Downtown which seem mostly motivated by real estate issues rather than historical context) . Other forms of media presence outside downtown such as cable TV (which has exploded recently since Google Fiber came through town), internet access (easily available everywhere except Downtown) etc., make it possible for outsiders to experience everything that makes DT2 so different but they also tend not be covered nearly enough given how prevalent infrastructure concerns have become inside Downtown which we can see more clearly from satellite imagery courtesy Ofcom – another entity closely monitoring interurban transportation patterns especially because fiber optics will soon allow virtually everyone northward telecommuting without ever having to leave their house – something that could fundamentally change suburban life much faster than anyone realizes just based on current trends). Finally let me say this: although I grew up almost exclusively near downtown ATLANTICA CITY GA where all my family did growing up (left home at 16 & moved away at 19 & started college nearby), starting middle school this past year I started commuting back & forth each day across I-285 into DOWNTOWN ATLANTICA CITY where I live now (& am working on getting my KFC approved 😁 ), experiencing everything that makes DT2 so unique makes me MUCH more grateful for having been born & raised here
