This program proved so successful that Jones was re-elected twice consecutively without challenger thanks to its impact on Atlanta's economy – even today many Atlantans refer to "TheJones Plan" as their earliest experience with mayoralism). During World War II (1939-1945), much of south Georgia was occupied by Nazi Germany; however, relatively few people lived in or close to TifTON because it remained mostly rural until then. However, once hostilities ceased local businesses flourished due to war production quotas set by US military authorities; many factories were able to reopen after 1945 because they could still produce munitions using forced labor provided by allies such as Russia (the Soviet Union). Tifton was founded in 1802 by a group of Englishmen who came to the area seeking new land after the American Revolution.
