The Tifton Rifle Club was formed in 1892. The rifle club's first meeting was held on December 5th, 1892 at the home of Mrs. John Witherspoon. Mr. Witherspoon donated a shotgun to the club and the first ever competitive shooting match was held at the Clay County Courthouse on January 11th, 1893. In 1895, the Tifton Rifle Club moved into its own building and began serving as a training ground for new members. In 1898, they hosted their first annual banquet which featured speeches by Congressman John Fenton and General James Forrestal. In 1903, Tifton Rifle Club became affiliated with the Georgia Rifle Association and began using their own target range located at 129 S Main Street in Tifton. This range served as both a training ground for new members and also used by other organizations within Georgia including NRA member associations in Augusta, Macon and Savannah. In 1916, due to World War I veteran registration laws being changed, the Tifton Rifle Club lost its affiliation with NRA but continued to use their own target range until 1920 when it closed down due to lack of membership growth. The building currently stands vacant however it is open to the public for target practice purposes only!
Tifton is a small city in Bibb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,693 at the 2010 census. Tifton is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The city is located on the Chattahoochee River and has a total area of just over 2 square miles (5 km²). It is one of the oldest settlements in Georgia andthe first town in what would become Bibb County. The site for Tifton was chosen by James Robertson in 1793 as the site for a new county seat after his purchase of 1,500 acres (600 ha) along the Chattahoochee River from David Taliaferro. In 1814, Alexander J. Macon donated land to make up for lost land during the War of 1812 that he had purchased from Spain. By 1821, all but two blocks of downtown were built; Macon’s donation included ground for a courthouse and jail. A post office was established in Tifton in 1825 and remained until 1865 when it moved to Decatur; it reopened as Tifton Post Office on July 15, 1896. In 1903, Tifton voters approved annexation by Atlanta because they felt that their city was under siege by nearby Macon City and Dunwoody without proper representation or services from their own government. Annexation resulted in an increase in taxes paid to Atlanta while reducing property values withinAtlanta's boundaries significantly – something that persists to this day among Georgianans living outside of Atlanta limits who appreciate how much better their qualityof life has improved since then due to increased access to education, job opportunities and other amenities available withinAtlanta's boundaries compared to those located inside its walls. The current name given to Tifton comes from early settler John Tollett’s suggestion that “If we give them enough cotton they will call us Titania” – an allusionto Shakespeare’s play "Othello". This appellation stuck and today many people know both our city and its full name simply as "Titania". The original plat map which still hangs on display at City Hall shows streets with different names such as High Street & Court House Road - until 1905 these streets actually ran parallel with each other just west of downtown! Some old maps still exist which list some older streets like West End Avenue instead ..... so if you google "titania" or "city hall" you can find out more about what street names used to be
