Tifton, Georgia is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. Tifton is located on the Oconee River and has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen Climate Classification "Cfa"). The first permanent settler in what became Tifton was James Cockerill in 1802. He married Anna Hawkins and had six children: James (1803-1876), John (1805-1873), Hannah (born 1807), Martha (born 1810), Johnathon (born 1812) and Emory Cockerill Jr. (born 1814). In 1830, Alfred King purchased 2/3 of the town from William Pritchard for £1000 ($1500 today). That year also saw construction of the first schools in Tifton - First Baptist Church which opened on October 12th 1830 with thirteen students and Reverend James Ladd as pastor. The school burned down in 1840 but was rebuilt by Henry Walton within five years and renamed Anson School; this building still stands to this day. In 1836, two brothers named Daniel Boone founded the first cotton gin in what became Tifton - one on Third Street south of present day I-75 Business Parkway and one further up Spring Street near where US Hwy 82 crosses over I-75 Business Parkway. These gins were used to produce cottonseed oil for home use until about 1850 when farmers switched to using soybeans instead due to their lack of availability of saltpeter or other essential ingredients needed to make oil from cottonseed kernels. In 1860, James Auld donated land north of present day I-75 Business Parkway for a courthouse which would become known as Auld Courthouse Square after him. The square's cornerstone was laid on July 10th 1861 by Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest with local dignitaries including Mayor Wm Bigham serving as witnesses.. After years of planning by many people including City Councilman Jno Simsbury who soon thereafter served as mayor pro tempore from 1865 until his death in 1870, finally groundbreaking took place on October 15th 1865 when General Robert Ewell arrived with his divisions following an advance through Chattanooga that days earlier had caused great alarm throughoutAtlanta because Federal forces were close enough so quietly not even artillery fire could be heard across town! This event marked not only Atlanta's entry into Confederate service but also her formal designation as 'the Union Capital' under General Ewell's command! A few weeks later President Abraham Lincoln made an address at Auld Courthouse Square during which he urged all Georgians to rise against slavery while pledging support for South Carolina's cause should that state secede from the Union although he did not mentionGeorgia specifically... After Lincoln's speech much celebration followed both inside and outside Auld Courthouse Square where citizens mobbed each other seeking news of emancipation plans being developed by Secretary Wells etc... From 1865 until 1890 there were three mayors Pro Tems - Jno Simsbury(65-70), George Stephenson(71-77) & Jno Byrnes(78-.80)), all elected directly without question or election votes; no gubernatorial elections were held during that time period! After much talk among various factions within GEMA about extending their boundaries into Lumpkin County eastward along US Hwy 129 / SR 2 just beyond current day exit 25 off I– 75 Business Parkway some tentative groundwork began early last decadeán registry numbers show reported platting activity dating back several months prior thereto particularly around NW corner HWY 129 / SR 2 intersection now occupied by Tim Hortons restaurant bearing flagofexpansion TPX #173206 immediately adjacentto existing business situating itself adjacentto former quarrysite identifiedby surveyor surveying team prior thereto....much property bordering LumpkinCounty East has yet to be registered though platting activity appears well underway subset comprisingapproximately 3/4ths thereof containing approximately 101 acres situated largely withinGEMA boundary formerly occupiedby quarrysite..... Plans submitted by architects rendering development possibilities indicate approximate site layout overlaying existing lot lines...... actual development may take many months or even longer depending upon various environmental reviews required before any final selection can be made
