Tifton is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 20,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County. The city is home to Tifton State University and two hospitals, Grady Memorial Hospital and Metropolitan Atlanta Healthcare System. The first permanent settler in what would become Tifton was James Waddell in 1802. A post office called Waddellville was established in 1805, and remained in operation until 1906. In 1827, John Milledge donated land to build a school for local children on the site of present-day Tifton High School. That same year, Tifton's first road was built: Old US Route 33W from downtown to the school site. The town had no financial independence until it became one of five counties within the new state of Georgia in 1881 due to its location on the border between Alabama and Georgia (the other four were Buckhead, Decatur, Smyrna and Peachtree City). As development accelerated around 1900 throughout much of central Georgia (and into adjacent Alabama), Tifton grew rapidly as a result of its advantageous location by railroads - including connections to Atlanta - and its close proximity to major markets such as Savannah and Macon. During this time period there were several large hotels/resorts located near downtown with visiting dignitaries often spending weekends or weeks at a time here while conducting business or attending meetings or events related to their travels through central Georgia or southeast Alabama; some examples include Confederate General Robert Ewell during his Operation Cross Roads raid into centralGeorgia on April 12-13 1865; President Grover Cleveland when he came to town for an agricultural fair; Governorof Georgia Jno Burchfield when he toured Tuskegee Institute; Admiral Peary when he visited nearby NAS Cobb Island during his Explorers' Expedition; Secretaryof War Edwin Stanton when he came down for an inspection tour aboard USS " Constitution" during World War I) all used TIFTON as their basecamp while performing various important functions within that region or making visits elsewhere in the state or nation respectively! At about this time growth began slowing again due mainly to factors such as difficult terrain & limited transportation access& industry consolidation which led many businesses out of town over competition from bigger cities likeAtlanta&Macon&Savannah which had larger populations but more accessible amenities&opportunities!! By 1940 only 15%of original population lived downtown still compared with today where nearly 80%of people live inside city limits!
