In 1888, Tifton had its own school district which served students from Tifton through middle schools and high schools within Athens County; however, this system ceased operation following annexation into Athens County in 1960. In 1984, all public schools within Clarke County were merged with those within Athens County to create an unified system known as "Clarke-Athens-Tifton". This consolidation also resulted in the creation of new subdivisions such as "Creek Valley", "Southern Heights" and "Eastside". Today, Tifton remains a small town with much focus on its local businesses and cultural attractions including its annual Fourth of July parade that travels down Main Street filled with antique cars and homes from different parts of history before ending at nearby Hawkins Elementary School where games are played until late into the evening

Tifton is a city in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 25,854 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fulton County and home to Tifton College. The town began as a small community on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River near present-day Decatur. In 1835, part of what is now Tifton was burned by General Nathan Bedford Forrest during his raid on Atlanta. As a result of the fire, many people fled to safety in Decatur and nearby rural areas. When Atlanta became an open-air prison in 1849, conditions in Tifton deteriorated rapidly. Many residents left for fear of being incarcerated there also. The last resident to leave Tifton was Orrin Judd in 1865. In 1850, Governor Andrew Johnson signed legislation creating organized township government for Fulton County under the laws of New York state (). The act provided for seven townships (including present-day Tifton) with their own governments and courts and allowed for development within those boundaries without prior approval from the state government As a result of this change in government structure, many people discovered that they could purchase land outside any particular township if they desired it This led to increased development within the limits established by Johnson's legislation as well as growth throughout Fulton County . The first school built in Tifton was on North Avenue nearpresent-day Paces Ferry Road ; it classes were held at night until1860 when an addition was made to house an infirmary . A Mechanics Institute was opened on South Avenue adjacent to present day Riggs School District Headquarters building in 1875 followed by Baptist Church (1878), Masonic Lodge No 1 (1880), Presbyterian Church (1884) and later Methodist Episcopal church (1905). A post office called "Tiftontown" opened at present day Decatur Street between Third Street and Fourth Avenue on January 17, 1865 By 1870 there were over 200 businesses operating out of downtown Tifton . By 1900 there were more than 300 businesses operating out of downtown TifTON alone . Growth continued through World War I with new housing developments such as Postal Service Inn (), Santa Fe Trailer Park (), Livingston Manor Loft () and others erected alongwith churches , hospitals , schools and other infrastructure In 1924 construction began on Constitution Boulevard which linked downtown with newly formed Midtown Business District
Tifton was founded in 1802 by a group of farmers who moved from Savannah. It became an important center for cotton production and served as a transportation hub for the eastern United States. The city was destroyed by fire in 1861, but it regained its former stature as a major cultural and commercial center during the Reconstruction Era.
