Tifton, Georgia was founded in 1821 by James Tifton and is the oldest town in the modern-day state of Georgia. The town originally consisted of only a few houses and became a small community with over 50 residents when it was incorporated as a municipality in 1868. Today, Tifton is one of the most culturally significant towns in Georgia due to its rich history and strong ties to the region. The first inhabitants of Tifton were Native Americans who lived near the present day intersection of US 31 and SR 822. It is believed that these tribes gathered around an artificial fire used for ceremonies to cook their food before moving on. After about 100 years of occupancy by various groups, European traders arrived in what is now Tifton in 1821. One such trader, John Smith, visited the area on his way from Savannah to Columbus, Georgia and noted that there were several villages situated around this point including "Tiftone", which he called "Tiffin". He also noted that there was abundant cornfield land nearby which may have led him to believe that this could be a future site for settlement. James Tifton purchased some land near what is now US 31/SR 822 east of present day Tifton on December 3rd, 1821 from James Cookson for $5 per acre (1/4 mile²). This purchase marked the beginning of development within present-day TifTON as it would become home to many early settlers including Captain John Moseley who built Moseley's Store at what is now Pritchett Road in 1830.
