Thomasville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,813 as of the 2010 census. By 1920, Thomasville had grown to include a school, post office, churches (two Methodist), two hotels - one called the "Old Bank Hotel", and several other businesses including a farmstead and two grain elevators. In 1922, when malaria began spreading through much of America due to the hot summer weather in areas such as Atlanta and Savannah,[1] Governor John Wmatchell ordered all cotton plantations within 750 miles (1,500 km) of Atlanta closed until better precautions could be put into place against the disease. As result of this order, most people in rural areas around Athens were forced to leave their homes or move away from their destroyed farms which lay idle during Prohibition-era times[2]. In 1923 however health officials announced that malaria cases had decreased since then so Governor Wmatchell reauthorized plantation closures for Athens-based farmers[3]. However by 1925 fear among some residents that malaria would spread from open areas near Atlanta into their towns led them to protest these orders with singing parades being held on nearby streets[4]. These demonstrations eventually led to passage of the Georgia Constitution providing for citizens' right to own property without individual government ownership.[5] This allowed for development of large tracts of land adjacent to downtown Athens where housing has been built ever since[6], while also contributing towards increased economic activity around downtown Athens during prohibition years[7][8]. Despite this period OFWU leadership pushing for statewide prohibition repeal,[9] many aspects of living day-to-day continue unchanged today outside OfWU control such as grocery stores not selling alcohol until well after midnight,[10] despite efforts by local governments over time have made changes hoping reduce drunkenness and crime rates [11][12][13][14], although recent heavy investment has caused some concerns about gentrification effects on working class neighborhoods across metroAtlanta [15],[16]; however overall social stability remains high with low levels off crime Rates despite growth over last 25 years
