Thomasville is home to the oldest continuously operating shooting range in the United States. The Thomasville Rifle and Pistol Club has been firing rifles, handguns and shotguns since 1892. The range was used for training during the American Revolution. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee visited Thomasville and shot a cannon at the range. The first shooting glasses were made of animal horn or brass by a Mr. Goodrich in 1887. A pair of spectacles were patented in 1893 by Drs. John Wiley and Sons of New York City as "Shooting Glasses." By 1895, there were more than 20 manufacturers producing shooting glasses in America alone. In 1902, Congress passed an act authorizing the Department of Commerce to promote rifle practice within certain limits on public lands throughout the country (lands that had not previously been open to hunting). This legislation led to the opening of many new ranges across America, including Thomasville Rifle and Pistol Club's own 10-acre lending track located just outside town on what is now known as North Central Georgia Rd., which opened in 1903! Today, this facility offers Trap & Skeet shoots as well as instruction on using firearms for fun purposes such as target practice or competition! In 1851, Thomasville became known as the "Gateway to the Confederacy". The town's growth slowed after a rail disaster in 1882 caused several fires, which destroyed many homes and businesses. In recent years, Thomasville has become a popular tourist destination for its history and architecture. There are several museums located within or around the city limits including the Georgia State Museum (opened in 1984),the old Medical School of Athens (opened in 1910),the Cobb County Courthouse (1892),and Vanderbilt University's Law School buildings (1906). There also is a small park located next to downtown that features several buildings from early settlement including a log cabin and two grist mills dating back to 1798.

When Augusta became part of Confederate States of America (Confederate States) following the war, many people in Thomasville joined their cause. Many businesses were closed down during Reconstruction (1865-1877). However, some businesses reopened and continue to operate today such as The George Waddell Store which served as an important local grocery store for many years until it burned down in 1984. Today, there are few physical remnants remaining from when Tom Thumb operated his plantation including three large cotton fields that still stand today on nearby land leased from him by the government for use as a public works project during Reconstruction era. Thanks to modern technology and research done at Auburn University’s School of History & Anthropology under Professor David Leland – one of our most renowned historians – we have learned more about this period in history than ever before thanks to these ancient Cotton Fields field sites!
