In 1840, when Georgia annexed Cherokee Nation land east of the Chattahoochee River, Thomasville became one of several frontier towns in Gwinnett County that were prosperous thanks to cotton farming and trade with Cherokee Nation villages along the river banks. With cotton prices soaring during the American Civil War because of production in southern states such as Kentucky and Tennessee controlled by Confederate forces, businesses such as warehouses and stores catering to soldiers began mushrooming throughout eastern Georgians following hostilities ceased on April 12th 1865. Many residents abandoned their rural homes for urban surroundings; however many remain today buried within downtown core boundaries due to subsidence caused by historical flooding events connected with dams constructed upstream over time including those erected along Interstate 285/I-285W between downtownThomasvilleandSandySprings
