Thomasville, located in the northeast corner of Georgia, was founded in 1822 by Captain James A. Cobb. The town grew rapidly due to its location and good soil for farming. To support its growth, Cobb developed a system of water drainage that permitted farming on high ground and created an artificial lake within the town limits. This allowed for the construction of large plantations and churches in the town. In 1851, Colonel John C. Smith established a military post at Thomasville to protect the region from Cherokee Indian attacks. Smith named his post after General George Washington, who had saved Thomasville during the Creek War. In 1858, General Andrew Johnson ordered all military posts in Georgia be destroyed except for those at Savannah and Valdosta because they were important strategic points on the southern border of Union territory. By 1861, most of Georgia had seceded from the United States and Confederate forces were active throughout much of the state. On April 12th, 1861, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered his brigade strength to converge on Thomasville from three directions: towards Columbus (the main Southern city), Dahlonega (a major center nearThomasville), and Macon (a small town about 25 miles east of Thomasville). The objective was to destroy any Union troops stationed in or around Thomasville before withdrawing northward into Tennessee under cover of darkness. Despite being outnumbered two-to-one by Confederate troops, Union Lt.-Colonel James Waddell managed to call up some local militia reinforcements and hold off Forrest's assault until morning hours; however, twenty-five men out of thirty-six killed or wounded in this engagement remain unmatched among American soldiers during this conflict. When news arrived that Johnston's army had been forced back across our border into North Carolina,[1] Colonel Smith abandoned his garrison at Thomasville and returned home with his family[2] – an event which has been calledperhaps one of history’s greatest reversals.[3] Aftermath [ edit ] Aftermath: One hundred fifty five men dead; 295 taken prisoner including 102 officers & enlisted men; $5 million worth OF property damage caused

Thomasville is a small town in Monroe County, Georgia, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of the Apalachicola National Forest and is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first settler in Thomasville was Nathaniel Bledsoe on November 5, 1803. He and his wife, Sarah Capps, founded a log cabin on what is now Elmwood Avenue. A post office called Thomasville was established in 1808 and remained in operation until 1870. In 1828, John Wesley Hardin purchased land east of town from Nathaniel Bledsoe for $1 per acre. The Hardins built several large homes including Fort Hill which still stands today and served as the center of government for much of early Thomasvillian history. In 1830, Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest appointed Wm Hance to survey a road from Savannah to Athens which became known as "Hance's Road". The first house built on this road was located near present day Elmwood Ave., just east of where it currently intersects US-27/GA-17 (the old US 27/GA 17 corridor). In 1834, Augustus Woodward donated land to the school district northwest of town for use as a public school yard. This donation remains one of the most significant contributions to education in local history. First grades started instruction in what is now Mrs. Gresham's School on December 4th, 1835 under guidance from Reverend James Caldwell who had also come from neighboring Indian Spring Creek Settlement to help start Thomasvilians' Schools system northward before that time – an event that has been documented by historians as oneof America's earliest open educational opportunities for all citizens regardless race or gender During Reconstruction times (1865–1871),Thomasville experienced some difficult times because its white residents were not allowed to vote without documentation or proof that they were living in Alabama or Mississippi while their black residents could vote without any trouble due to their legal status as freedmen – an issue that continues today with some people claiming they are illegally registered voters because they moved since then In 1865 when Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Georgia & burned Atlanta along with many other Southern towns & plantations he destroyed much private property including churches (& church records) within reach of negroes so whenever anyone asks where these houses stand today we tell them off limits! So if you're looking at our unusual architecture anywhere around here chances are you're looking at something destroyed by General Robert Ewell during Reconstruction days But unlike most places throughout America where buildings have been lost forever due mostly to vandalism over time rather than natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes etc., those houses do survive intact inside walls & rooflines thanks largely to restoration work done by enthusiasts over the years starting with Edwin Pugh who began restoring these properties back into productive community members after spending numerous summers exploring & photographing them right outside my door! By 1997 there were only 3 original structures remaining remaining standing but within 8 years or soて entirely new homes were being constructed next door! Nowadays there are more than 20+ structures standing around Thomasville proper if you include all those Destruction Sites included within city limits!! The result? An incredible amountB&W photos taken during restoration work can be found online freely available if you Google "Thomasvillian Restoration Project" As well as lots more detailed information about each individual structure found inside- making it easy enough even for nonhistoric preservation buffs like myself!) All things considered though I would say overall things have definitely improved since reconstruction days here in Thomasville LOL…sorta 🙂 Anyway onto business: backtracking a bit…about me:As someone who loves History (especially American History!), having visited most every tourist spot imaginable between Jacksonville Beach FL & Chattanooga TN during my stays across different types of tourist visas (tourist cards etc.) I've become pretty familiar with virtually everything Tennessee has TO offer both historically speaking (& archaeologically speaking…) although I haven't yet ventured out into Union County (!), home to such interesting historical sites as presidential birthplace Abingdon Courthouse (& plenty more besides)……So when Watson Laughlin Associates contacted me about doing some research on potential locations for a museum/museum complex dedicated specifically TO THE AMERICAN INDIAN WAR OF 1861–1865 inside THE RECONSTRUCTION ERA HOUSE THAT WAS IN TEXAS FOREST MUSEUM ZONES AFTER THAT LOT OF TIME PASSED BY FROM WHEN THEY FIRST CONTACTED ME ABOUT IT ALL BACK THEN!!! My initial reaction wasn't too thrilled but after talking with them more about it I realized how important it would be not just for tourists BUT ALSO FOR GEORGIA ITSELF IF WE EVER WANTED TO SHOW THE STATE AGAIN HOW GREAT OF A PEOPLE OUR OWN MINNESOTA TERRITORY IS BEING REFLECTED TODAY ON ALL LEVELS INCLUDING WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY !!!"
