Thomasville is a small town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. Thomasville was founded in 1846 as a settlement by Welsh immigrants, on the site of present-day Thomson Hall, located near what is now I-85 and US 19. The first post office was established in 1848, and the town had its first school in 1850. Thomasville's growth slowed after the Civil War; however, it increased rapidly during Reconstruction when many of Atlanta's freed slaves found work here. In 1870, local merchants formed the town association to promote economic development within Thomasville limits. By 1880, agricultural production had replaced manufacturing as the mainstay of Thomasville's economy; however, this changed with entry into World War II and an increase in military spending that led to an expanded industrial base. By 1945, industry had largely decreased as wartime production shifted to munitions plants around the country; however,Thomasville has since regained some degree of prosperity through various retail businesses and new housing developments. The current incarnation of Thomasville began developing in earnest after World War II ended; along with nearby Decatur (formerly Dunwoody), it became one of several rural areas reverse-engineered by developer David Boren into a "new Athens" - or "Gone With The Wind" - characterized by high-density housing developments built throughout open fields and rolling countryside instead of clusters of bland brick buildings tucked away on tree-lined streets like most other American towns during that era. Today's downtown area - home to city hall and many commercial enterprises such as KFC - occupies much more space than did either Dunwoody or Athens during their earlier phases; but while efforts have been made over the years to make downtown more pedestrian friendly (including installation of large sidewalks and a promenade), much remains undone including Comprehensive Plan revisions which would add significant acreage for public transportation use within walking distance both north/south from UTC Stadium (the central business district) as well as east/west across Fulton Street from numerous cultural attractions (eastern Terminus Arts District includes several theaters built expressly for movie screenings).

Thomasville was founded in 1814 by Colonel James Stephens and his family. The community grew quickly, with a population of around 100 people in 1828. By 1840, the town had over 1,000 residents. In 1850, Thomasville became the county seat of Hawkins County. It remained so until 1907 when it was moved to Decatur. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley attacked Thomasville and destroyed most of the town's infrastructure. The attack destroyed much of what later made up Thomasville Sr.'s home from that time on. In 1870, another Confederate raid against the town resulted in the death of several people and damage to many homes. The late 1800s were a time of great change forThomasville as well as Hawkins County overall. With the start of World War I, things changed rapidly for both communities. For Thomasville, it was finally able to build its own hospital after years of being reliant on neighboring hospitals. For Hawkins County, this meant that its largest city now had access to medical care outside their borders – something that would have a significant impact on local culture and way of life for decades to come. During World War II, much work took place within Hawkins County towards creating an air force base at nearby Stewart Air Force Base in order to provide service to our allies during wartime (and also becauseDecatur needed a military presence). However little is known about this period because almost all records pertaining thereto were lost or destroyed during wartime efforts (a fact which has recently been addressed by historians working on regional histories for Georgia). On July 4th 1946 - just shy of 60 years ago - Thomasvillians set off fireworks display across Buttonwood Lake in remembrance of their fallen friends who died while serving our country overseas during World War II (and more importantly; their families who supported them through thick and thin!). This display remains oneofthe longest continuously scheduled displays throughout Cobb County!
Thomasville was founded in 1785 by John Thomas. The town was named for Thomas, the founder of the town. The first settlers in the area were physicians who traveled to Georgia to help with the new colony's medical needs. In 1814, the United States Postal Service established a post office in Thomasville and named it after General James Wilkinson.
