Thomasville, Georgia is a small town located in the state of Georgia. It is known for its optical industry, which has been active since the late 1800s. The town was founded by a man named Elisha Semon and his wife, who ran a grocery store. They developed an interest in glassmaking and started manufacturing optical products. In 1908, they opened their own factory. By 1912, they had produced over 2,500 items including spectacles, telescopes, binoculars and microscopes. In 1916, they became the first company to produce electronic devices using vacuum tubes. During World War II, they made munitions and other devices for the military. In 1934 it became an incorporated city; in 1965 it became part of metro Atlanta; and in 1997 it became a separate county within Fulton County. Today, Thomasville is a thriving community with many active businesses and cultural attractions including four public schools (one of which is also home to Georgia Southern University), two churches (Mount Zion Baptist Church and First Baptist Church), three hospitals (including one with Treatments for Children Hospital), two parks (One Park at Lakewood Hill Elementary School offers baseball and softball games as well as educational programming throughout summer months.), four libraries/research centers/ museums/, five restaurants/cafes/, nine bars., plus more than seventy small businesses .
