The town was founded in 1801 when five families together purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) along Lookout Creek from Major John Simonton, an army officer and member of the Cherokee nation. The town was named after General Thomas Jackson, who visited it in 1795 and recommended its establishment as a trading post on a route between Savannah and Montgomery County, Alabama. In 1820, Colonel James Milledge bought 1,500 acres (680 hectares) around Thomasville from Major John Simonton for $5 per acre plus interest; this gave rise to what is now known as Milledge County. In 1830–31, Colonel Milledge erected a stockaded fortification called "Tommy Hill" at what is now downtown Thomasville in order to protect his land against hostile Indians. This fortifications are still standing today within view of downtown streetscape and can be accessed by walking or biking trails approaching from both directions off Interstate 285 northbound near Interstate 240 southbound). By 1840, many citizens had moved into new homes built on confiscated Cherokee lands west of Tom Jones Bridge which became known as White Settlement because almost all white settlers came from nearby Augusta and Americus counties in Georgia during that decade-plus period that followed independence from Great Britain in 1814. In 1847–48 two Quitman brothers led over 200 men across the Tennessee River into Georgia to purchase 1 million acres (540 km2) of western territory including present-day Cobb County; they were also seminal figures leading up to secessionist movements throughout Deep South America during periods such as this one – specifically Andalusia Colony where they resided with their cattle herds until 1861 when Confederate forces seized control following their victory at First Manassas Battlefield among other significant events taking place during early antebellum America’s southern evolution more generally known as Reconstruction / Emancipation / Unification under federal rule which ended in 1865 once again with Union victories at Appomattox Court House despite some key black Southern politicians like Booker T Washington remaining influential well into into that era’s later decades). Efforts have been made over time to rename part or all of downtown “Thomasville Historic District” but no success has been forthcoming so far despite efforts by several local Residents groups/Tribes/ Organizations starting back in the late 1990s although much further progress has been made since then particularly given increased awareness & support coming through various special events such as recent county-wide HeritageFestivals being staged annually hereabouts since 2004 (& comprising various cultural activities & educational opportunities spanning different periods & disciplines including architecture investigation heritage mapping historic restoration etc.)). Located on 3 blocks bounded: NW by Second Street NW by Third Street SW by Beaver Dam Road SE by US Highway 285 & US Highway 240 lies “Old Main Street” aka Courthouse Drive which begins just northeast thereof intersection w/ 2nd Ave., continues northwestward past 3rd Ave., intersects 4th Ave soon thereafter before terminating abruptly due east thereof just beyond an old grain elevator property line northerly boundary of today's Town limits opposite ensuing Beaver Dam Rd.).
