Thomasville was founded by a group of farmers in 1845. The name comes from the Cherokee word "htola" meaning "border post." The town was originally located on the north side of the Chattahoochee River, but as the river grew closer to Thomasville, they decided to move. In 1898, the town moved to its current location on the south side of the river. In 1881, Johnnie L. Hill patented a holster for protection against knife attacks. This holster is still in use today and has been used by police officers all over America. In 1924, Mayor Worthy approved an ordinance that allowed women to carry handguns in public areas. This law made Thomasville one of the first cities in Georgia to allow women to own firearms. Since 1975, Thomasville has been home to the world's largest recitation of Hamlet at Shakespeare Festival.
