Thomasville is a town in Clayton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 1,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1809 by Alexander Macon and named for General Thomas Jackson of the Continental Army. The first post office was established in 1810. In 1814, Thomasville became a town under the jurisdiction of Muscovy Township. In 1836, it became part of Clayton County. A cotton gin was built in 1865 and used to produce cotton until 1922 when it closed due to technology advances. A new cotton gin opened in 1984 and continues to be used today. A locomotive depot was also built here during this time period that served as an important transportation hub for the community until it closed in 1990 due to budget cuts.
