Thomasville, GA is a small town located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The town has been around since 1811 and its namesake, Thomasville, was first settled by Welsh immigrants. The population of Thomasville reached 790 in 1880. Gun target shooting began in the town in 1905 and has kept alive through many changes and expansions over the years. Today, Thomasville is home to a large number of gun enthusiasts from all over Georgia as well as internationally. There are registered shooters from as far away as Australia and New Zealand who come to shoot at local target ranges. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the NRA'sGeorgia Section which provides support for members range operations throughout the state. Thomasville is a city in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 30,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cobb County. In 1798, General James Wilkinson purchased 2,000 acres (8 km2) of land near present-day Thomasville from the Muscogee Nation for $5 per acre. The town site was chosen because it had an ample water supply and its location on the Chattahoochee River made it easy to defend against attack from Native Americans. In 1802, Wilkinson renamed the town "Wilkinson" in honor of himself and his father-in-law, General James Rogers. The first school in what is now Thomasville was built in 1811 by John Eaton as part of a public school system that he created to educate African American children living on his plantation along the Chattahoochee River. The school continued operation until 1865 when it was replaced by a new building that still stands today. The first white teacher taught in what is now Thomasville was Mrs. Anna Boonesborough who arrived in 1847 from Ossining, New York with her husband Amos Booneesborough and 3 daughters. Mrs. Booneesborough served until 1870 when she left for good to return home to Pennsylvania where she died four years later at age 86 years old. In 1868–69, two groups of men – one led by Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest and one led by Wiley Post – waged a three-day battle against local farmers and militia forces near what is now downtown Thomasville before fleeing into nearby woods. The first store opened in what is now downtown Thomasville in 1892. In 1924, the post office moved out of downtownThomasville to become one mile (1 km) east of present day Interstate 495. In 1954–55, construction began on I‐495 between Atlanta and Chattanooga which would eventually lead to Thomasvilless growth spurt during this time period; much infrastructure such as roads were being developed there. In 1886, the Thomasville Electric Light Company was founded and became one of the largest electric companies in Atlanta metropolitan area before being merged into Southern Electric Corporation in 1970. The first recorded instance of people engaging in the activity took place in 7 BC, when two men set up a firing platform to shoot at game near Alexandria, Virginia. In 1892, the US Patent No. 3,898,080 was issued to John Fenton for the development of a “gun accurator” which allowed shooters to hit targets at an accuracy of 1/2 inch (13 mm). In 1907, Pistolero magazine published an article on how to shoot accurately with pistols. Gunnery Sergeant Hiram Maxim developed what is now known as the Maxim gun which could fire 500 rounds per minute and was accurate beyond 5 yards (4 m). This handgun revolutionized infantry warfare by allowing troops to engage enemies from distances up to 100 meters (330 yd) away. From 1892 until 1934, all major advances in firearm technology were made with handguns including the semi-automatic M1911 pistol which became popular among law enforcement officers and soldiers throughout World War II. By 1934, however, rifles had become more prevalent in projectilebased military conflicts due to their ability to penetrate armor and enable sustained fire against large groups at longer ranges than handguns could provide.
