In 1845–46, James Kenedy built Kenedy's House as headquarters for his cotton gin operations in what is now downtown Thomasville. From here he issued bills through his agent Major John Pemberton until 1850 when he sold out to Andrew Johnson and left town entirely. During Reconstruction (1866-1912), many African Americans were forced off their farms in order to work on white plantations or join forces with Confederate troops during the war effort; some residents who refused to leave their homes were branded "natives" and hunted down by local law enforcement officers. As Reconstruction ended and new rules were put into place that favored whites over blacks, many people decided to move away from this difficult period in their lives. However, some families chose to stay because they believed that their presence would help improve race relations overall in Georgia; this attitude changed after World War II when Atlanta began its high-speed growth which sent jobs southward throughout the state discriminatory policies against black Atlantans continued unchanged until the late 1960s when Title VII ofthe Civil Rights Act made these policies illegal discrimination against all citizens an unlawful act nationwide. In 1845, President Andrew Johnson issued an Executive Order removing all Negroes living within five miles (8 km) of any white person or family except those engaged in agricultural pursuits or attending school purposes. This order provoked widespread resistance throughout the state; however, some whites surrendered without violence and many others left for fear of retribution should they be removed from their homes too.
