After Union troops routed Confederate forces at this engagement, most residents chose not to move away from their homes (although some did).In 1865, following Reconstruction efforts which aimed to end slavery throughout America – specifically in Georgia – Thomasville experienced another boom period as businesses closed their doors and people rushed into town for jobs and education opportunities unavailable elsewhere.
