Thomasville is a city in and the county seat of Pickens County, Georgia, United States. It is located on the Savannah River, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Atlanta. They named their new settlement for General James Oglethorpe, who had recently served as governor of Georgia. In 1835, General Andrew Jackson appointed John Covington sheriff of Pickens County and moved his headquarters to Thomasville to complete this office which he had done before becoming president that year. From here Jackson issued orders controlling all aspects of local government within the county and appointing justices to hear cases at various rural courthouse meetings throughout the county until Jackson's assassination in 1865. John Covington was re-elected sheriff in 1840 but died suddenly two years later at age 44 while serving a term ending on December 31st,. He was buried near downtown Thomasville with full military honors where today's John Covington Park still stands; an excellent example of antebellum architecture and engineering services offered by citizens during this time period In 1861 Confederate forces burned town and killed most everyone except eight women and four children who managed to escape into surrounding fields until Union troops eventually recaptured them just before nightfall

Thomasville, Georgia is a town in Pickens County, Georgia, United States. The population was 5,388 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest community in Pickens County after Decatur. The first settler in Thomasville was John Ladd who came to what is now Thomasville in 1824. He founded a small farming and trading post on the Chattahoochee River. A year later, he erected a log cabin on the site of present day Thomasville High School and named it Ladd's Campground after himself and his son George Washington Ladd II (1797-1868). In 1827, John Ladd's daughter married Andrew Jackson Crawford and they moved to what is now Auburn Avenue in downtown Thomasville where they began to operate a grocery store. They also bought land for pioneer school buildings which were completed by 1829. Andrew Jackson Crawford died young however his wife continued business operations with her children until she retired in 1865 when her son, James Crawford inherited the store assets. Thomasville was founded in 1802 by Captain John Thomas and his family. The town was named for General James Thomas, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1830, the town had a population of around 100 people. In 1847, the town's first post office opened. By 1860, the population had grown to around 300 people. In 1870, the town had a school and a store. The population jumped to over 500 people by 1880. By 1890, there were six businesses in the town and three schools.
