The town became one of Georgia's most significant slave communities and many slaves were born here including Cate Blanche Deaton (founder of Coca-Cola), Josephine Baker (founder of Lucy Stone Productions), Rosa Parks (Sojourner Truth), Donald Trump (real estate magnate),and others. In 2000 Governor Sonny Perdue created a new economic development corporation called "Towne Square" which provides jobs for residents and businesses within 5 miles of downtown Athens or better yet 10 miles depending on activity levels within that radius; this organization helps spur economic growth for surrounding areas."

After Reconstruction came an era of decline forThomasville due to political instability and social change within African American communities. However, some residents persevered through these difficult times and continue to live here today. Some notable leaders from this time include Mayor Davenport Heaton who helped bring about rapid economic growth during World War II; Judge Wiley Youngblood who led efforts to integrate schools into society; Representative Everett Dirksen who was instrumental in passage of the Bill of Rights; and Mayor Harry Hughes who spearheaded efforts to improve city services including creating streetlights and developing downtown streetscape). Today, Thomasville has undergone numerous changes including becoming home to several high-tech companies such as Intel Xeon Processor Campus USA located on Courthouse Square; Georgian Homes properties situated near Governor Hill Park ;and Stonewall Jackson High School which offers 9/11 related classes. Although many aspects of its past remain unchanged, Thomasville is experiencing continued growth both commercially and culturally which makes it an excellent destination for visitors looking for insight into Georgia's earliest days or simply curious about its unique history
