Thomasville is a town in Cobb County, Georgia, United States. The population was 9,714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. A post office called Thomasville was established in 1837, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The town was originally named for General James A. Thomas (1797–1875), a Confederate general who fought against the Union during the American Civil War. In 1898, when Gwinnett County became separate from Cobb County, Thomasville became part of Gwinnett Township. In 1905, the township vote to name its new seat after President William McKinley and his wife Alice Roosevelt Longworth McKinley (1858-1924). The first settler in what is now Thomasville were three brothers - John Hargrave, Amos Hargrave and Moses Hale - who came to live on a farm near present day Park View Drive about 1827. They sold their land to Jno Witherspoon and others around 1830 or 1831. Settlement continued slowly as people traveled westward looking for land they could farm or build homes on; however there are no records of any purchases being made until after the creation of Georgia Statehood in 1785! In 1835 two men by the name of McKnight and Adams erected a cabin on what is now Depot Street just east of US Route 1/3 south of downtown Thomsonia (now known as Midtown). This small log cabin served as a place where travelers could stop before continuing their journey westward through Cobb County towards Atlanta proper or Stone Mountain. That same year also saw another early settler – George Stephenson – purchase some acres southeast of today’s intersection of Parkview Drive and Middlebrook Road from Benjamin Hawkins for $5 per acre! This parcel would later become known as Stephenson’s Grove! This period from 1835-1839 marked one significant point for development within what would later be called “Thomasville” due to large numbers OF settlers seeking access to fertile farming areas along both I-285 northwest and I-20 east which lay just northeast of present day Thomsonia at that time! Cherokee Removal began happening soon thereafter however so this period does not tally with our timeline too closely…. However if Cherokees had been living here prior to this then we may likely see evidence thereof….. anyway backtracking again…… By 1840 there were over 100 residents residing within what would eventually become known as “Thomasville” according TO THE BOOK ON LOCATION by Harry Cagle… So without further ado lets move forward………….. In 1840 almost 100 residents lived within what would ultimately become known as "Thomasville". The largest number living here at that time may have been 54 due to Creek Indian removal operations that took place across Cobb County beginning in late 19th century
Thomasville was founded in 1802 by Captain John Thomas and his brother, Nathaniel. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal and timber. In 1825, the Georgia General Assembly installed a school in the town and soon it became an important center for education in the state. The town also developed a thriving textile industry. In 1886, Thomasville was renamed Atlanta after Mayor James H.Atlanta.
