Thomasville is a town in Fulton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 8,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1831 by General Andrew Jackson as a post office on the Chattahoochee River. A number of businesses were located here including Armoury & Munitions Plant (now known as Fort Cobb), which produced aircraft parts for America's war effort; Paintshares Inc., which manufactured tires for military use; Southern Airways' aviation maintenance hangar; and Sheetmetal Saws Works Company (now known as Southern Railway Sheds). In 1957, Thomasville voters passed a resolution recognizing their role in history with a plaque dedicated to veterans who had fought or served in World War II within the town limits - this objective was accomplished two years later when General Motors opened its new manufacturing plant adjacent to Interstate 20 east of town. This industrial development brought new life to downtown streetscapes vacated by millworkers who took advantage of tax breaks available thanks to GM's investment before shuttering operations completely in 1984 following aggressive marketing efforts backed by then-town manager Donny Youngblood Sr.. Today redevelopment is ongoing along I-20 corridor with mixed-use buildings/residential options overlooking downtown streetscape with revitalization plans announced for nearby Walton High School/Downtown parkland redevelopment project (Phase 1)
Thomasville was founded in 1817 by General Robert E. Lee and his family. It became a Confederate stronghold during the American Civil War, and was later renamed Richmond after the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia.
