The town was named for Colonel Thomas Smyth, an American Revolutionary War hero who had served in the Georgia militia. The Forsters were the first white settlers in what is now Thomasville. The community grew rapidly during the early 19th century as a result of its location on the edge of a natural disaster area – the Appalachee River floodplain. In 1825, Forrest established a school within the town limits and soon began to build a mills and other businesses. The Forsters also became active in politics and played an important role in creating Tennessee Territory out of Georgia after the state's admission to the Union on July 1, 1829. In 1830, General Forrest married Cora Hardin, daughter of noted planter John Hardin of Atchison, Kansas. The couple moved to Thomasville and started a new chapter in Thomasville's history – they were both constantly busy expanding their business interests and developing musical enterprises. Their son John A. Forrest was born here in 1835. During Reconstruction era (1865-1913), many African Americans relocated to Thomasville from various parts of Georgia due to harsh anti-black discrimination policies under Confederate rule. Many blacksmiths, mechanics, carpentry workers and others found work at local businesses run by white owners during this time period. Afterward, most black resident worked as laborers or janitors inside white households throughout much of Atlanta until integration into public education systems took place beginning in 1964 followed by full civil rights guarantees granted nationwide following passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964
