The town of Suwanee was founded in 1821 by General John Seale and his party of cavalrymen as a stop on their way to trade with the Cherokees. It became an agricultural center with early production of cotton and corn crops. In 1836, Suwanee joined the Union as a result of the American Civil War. In 1870, Suwanee's first post office was established. By 1880, it had grown to include a hotel and store complex that housed 30 settlers and their families. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its strategic location - just south of Atlanta on I-285 - along main water routes necessary for moving goods betweenAtlanta and Chattanooga, Tennessee; Savannah, Georgia; and Huntsville, Alabama. During World War II (1939-1945), Suwanee served as one of two overwhelmingly African American towns in Cobb County (the other being Decatur). During that time period there were few opportunities for African Americans to gain high-level positions within Cobb County government or basic rights granted under U.S. Constitution guarantee such as voting access or education opportunities for all citizens regardless race or ethnicity
