Suwanee, Georgia is a town in Gwinnett County, Georgia. It is the county seat of Gwinnett County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,569. The original Suwanee Post Office was established on December 12, 1892. Suwanee was named for General James Suwannakee who fought in the American Revolution and also served as a Brigadier General in the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. The first shotgun shooting contest took place at Suwanee High School on February 14th 1895. This event was part of rifle season and shotguns were not yet available to civilians. Shotguns became available to civilians in 1896 when a local gunsmith created a shotgun magazine that allowed customers to purchase shotguns without having to go through an armorer or dealer

Suwanee is the home of Selma College and the headquarters for southcentral Georgia's Centennial Commission on History. The land that would become Suwanee was first settled by slaveholders in 1786. In 1827, investors organized a town charter from what were then two small settlements—Fulton and Newnan—on unincorporated land between Stone Mountain and Forgan Springs Creek. The original town site lay just east of present-day Suwanee High School on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River. The name "Suwanee" (a Choctaw word meaning "place where cotton is grown") was chosen to honor General James Wilkinson's victory over Native American forces at Battle of Buena Vista in 1814. In 1830, following Union occupation of Georgia following the Mexican–American War, Confederate soldiers burned some stores in Fulton after they failed to capture an artillery piece belonging to Union General Winfield Scott. This event led to anti-Confederate sentiment throughout Putnam County and helped spur development around downtown SuwanEE as well as new businesses such as lumber yards and coffeehouses/taverns along Stone Mountain Road. After passage of the Reconstruction Act of 1868 which reestablished black supremacy in America, most white Atlantans relocated away from what became known as "the lost Cause." However, many African Americans who had been born or raised here remained committed to democratic values and working towards restoration of their former society before leaving for other parts of America during this difficult time period; some settling permanently in Georgia while others choosing relocation options including Alabama, Mississippi or Florida during this era of racial turmoil across the South When Selma College opened its doors in 1923 with predominantly white students from nearby Americus (population 724), it signaled another important milestone for SuwanEE; municipal government changed hands from rural landowners to an institution within city limits that could bring people together for education and economic opportunities beyond subsistence farming conditions common among blacks living adjacent to white towns during this time period Since 2000, much effort has been put into renovating downtown SuwannEE with plans underway for a major revitalization campaign which will culminate with an Independence Day celebration featuring live music and fireworks on May 4th 2020
